For countless Indian households, choosing a first car means finding a vehicle that is compact, efficient in fuel consumption, easy to park, and still embodies an SUV feel. The Tata Punch has become a top contender in meeting these needs. Tata Motors recently announced that it has sold over 8 lakh units of the Punch in India, achieving this feat in less than five years since its launch.

Rapid Sales Growth Since Launch

First introduced in October 2021, the Punch has risen to join the ranks of Tata Motors’ best-selling passenger vehicles. It notably holds the record as the quickest SUV in India to surpass the 8 lakh sales milestone.

The demand for the Punch remains robust. From August 2025 to July 2026, Tata sold 2,18,754 units, which includes both petrol and electric versions. This figure is 47,788 units higher than the same period the previous year.

Here are the recent sales figures:

Punch continued to perform well through July 2026 with 21,313 units sold, making it Tata’s top passenger vehicle for the month. It was also India’s fifth best-selling car that month. For the months of March, May, June, and July this year, Punch sales crossed 20,000 units each month.

Multiple Fuel and Powertrain Choices

One of the standout aspects of the Punch is its versatile powertrain lineup. Customers can select from petrol, CNG, or electric variants.

The petrol offering includes a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine as well as a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The turbo version delivers 120bhp and 170Nm, paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

The CNG model features Tata’s twin-cylinder system and is equipped with an AMT gearbox, marking it as the first SUV in India available with a CNG-AMT combination. For those preferring electric, the Punch EV expands the range with two battery pack options.

  • 7-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless charging
  • 360-degree camera
  • Cruise control
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Air purifier
  • Eight-speaker audio system
  • Touch-based climate controls

The Punch EV further improves on this with dual 10.25-inch displays, connected car features, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera on higher variants.

Electric Variant Receives Bigger Battery

In a recent upgrade, the electric Punch now boasts a 40kWh battery, certified by ARAI for a range of 468km. This larger battery supports 65kW DC fast charging. Tata claims the battery can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in 26 minutes and offers a lifetime warranty.

Prices for the Punch EV start at Rs 9.69 lakh and go up to Rs 12.79 lakh (ex-showroom). With Tata’s Battery-as-a-Service plan, the starting price falls to Rs 6.49 lakh, while battery usage charges begin at Rs 2.5 per km.

The petrol Punch ranges from Rs 5.70 lakh to Rs 10.67 lakh (ex-showroom).

A Leading Model in Tata’s Lineup

Crossing the 8 lakh sales mark underscores the widespread appeal of the Tata Punch across India. Its compact build, SUV styling, extensive safety features, multiple engine options, and availability as an EV have made it a popular choice for diverse types of buyers.
